How cruel Sport can be - Rory McIlroy

Hole 10, last round at Augusta and it’s all gone horribly wrong.  Leading the pack for so long at the top, golf is one of those sports where it can turn around on a sixpence.

Rory McIlroy … completely bewildered and left wondering how it could have all gone so wrong, walks off that hole only to take his next tee shot straight into the water.

At the same time there’s a run of 5 birdies in a row for Ogilvy – how can it be so different? And Tiger, suddenly showing the kind of play that made him into a household name?  The irony of seeing McIlroy having a collapse on the same scale as that of Greg Norman in ’96, whilst the Aussie’s are all showing form that would rival that of the best players out there…

So what’s going on?

McIlroy hasn’t suddenly lost his technique … he’s not ‘forgotten’ how to play … and his opponents haven’t suddenly got better than him … and yet that’s how it seems.

State Management.  Pure and simple.  Or rather, lack of.

McIlroy, for reasons that will only ever be known to him (‘cos we’re not there with him to check it out!) has slipped out of his performance state and into, well, a non performance state!

It doesn’t have to be a major anxiety.  It doesn’t have to be a total breakdown. It can simply be that what’s he was thinking and how his physiology was at the time has created a state that was not conducive to excellent performance. Or even good performance.  In situations like this, unless we get out of it early, you get what we’ve seen tonight … the slow, steady and incredibly painful slide into oblivion – and the obvious emotional response that comes with it.

But can you do anything about this?

Yes, and as with becoming a professional golfer, you have to spend time and effort training to get as much control over your mental and physical state as you do perfecting a tee shot that draws from right to left, or your ability to sink a putt from 15 feet on an undulating green.

There’s no doubt that players spend a considerable amount of time pondering over the game, thinking about how the game will go, or visualizing how to hit the ball over the water (or should that be how it lands on the green….!), but how well is this mental training really done?

If you want to be the complete player, whether it’s in golf, hockey or 10 pin bowls then learning how to take control of the 6 inches between the ears it an absolutely essential part of your development as a athlete.

To find out more about how to accelerate your mental skills and take control for sport, call us NOW on +44 (0)208 398 2127 or drop us an email at Katie@inside-performance.com

Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust

We're delighted to be working alongside the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, which is a charity set up by Dame Kelly herself to 'create life chances for young people', through the platform of competitive sport.

Young people are inspired and supported by the charity's team of 'Olympians, Paralympians, World, Commonwealth and European Champions who know what it takes to overcome adversity, and still have the will to succeed, not only in sport, but in life too', and as such we are excited to be working with this team of outstanding athletes, helping them with the skills and capabilities required in coaching and mentoring the young people they support to reach their full potential.
